There was a boy in Italy. His family had been small scale bankers for several generations.
He was just 6 years old when his mother died of a prolonged illness. The boy then lived with his nanny and her husband who was a stone cutter.
The boy used to watch the man cutting stones and grew a passion for marble.
When he started going to school, he showed less interest in studies and was mostly found near churches in the company of painters who painted drawings on the church walls. He found his passion in studying the art and sculptors in and around the churches.
The boy started his hands on painting and sculpting.
He could work for hours and hours together.
Slowly and gradually he became good at his art.
He had great dreams and always thought big.
Soon he became famous for his work.
He was once asked to take up an enormous project – Painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chappel – the official residence of the Pope in Vatican City (Rome).
It was a huge 6000 sq ft ceiling. The task looked almost impossible.
He started on this unrealistic project.
He used to paint while hanging from the ceiling 70 feet in air for hours and hours.
It took 4 long years and finally the ceiling of the Sistine Chappel was revealed.
We know him as Michelangelo.
He created great sculptors and painting in his lifetime.
He is described as one of the greatest artists of all time.
